My name is Dawna Karalash and I am happy to introduce you to my little soap shoppe, – Pebble Baye Soap Co. On the beautiful shore of Pebble Baye, SK.
I have been a soaper since 2003 and just this last year, realized a decades long desire to retire from a long fulfilling career in nursing, and focus on my creative side and my love of fine soaps and quality skin care.
If you’ve never tried a bar of handmade Cold Processed soap before, let me tell you a bit about mine.
Made with oils of coconut, olive, canola and a veggie blend, these soaps are made in a centuries old tradition called Cold Processing. Oils are chosen for the properties they bring to the final product, and are meticulously weighed and melted. This really is chemistry and science at this point. These oils are then added to a heated lye bath that can be made with many different liquids. I use water and other ingredients like Goat’s Milk, coconut milk, teas and even beer, to produce a wide variety of different end results with different qualities. For example coconut oil used in cold processed soaping produces a bar of soap with creamy, sumptuous lather. Who wouldn’t want that?
When the oils and the lye combine, a chemical process called Saponification begins and this is truly where the magic happens and the soap is created.
Cold processed soaps require a month of curing/drying time after production, and the finished product is a bar of incredibly long lasting and wonderfully moisturizing soap. It contains no chemical detergents that contribute to skin drying, tightness or flaking. These soaps also retain their natural glycerin, which is a by-product of soap making that is often removed in commercially produced soaps to be used for lotion production, creams, etc.
If scented, I choose quality essential and/or fragrance oils, and if coloured, it is with spices such as turmeric or cocoa, or cosmetic grade oxides and ultramarines. I am a huge advocate and believer in the value of exfoliating our skin and some of my bars will contain additional exfoliating ingredients like hemp seeds, sea tangle, coconut, poppy seeds, etc.
Priced according to the recipe and ingredients used, bars range from $6.50 to $7.50 per 100 grams. All bars are hand cut and range in size anywhere from 100-150 grams – the average being around 130 grams, give or take. I like to tease that the discrepancies in bar sizes is directly related to the amount of coffee I’ve consumed before cutting the huge slab of soap coming out of the mould. Rest assured that you are only paying for what you are getting, as all bars are weighed individually regardless of size.
Ordering soap at any time other than during the Studio Trail is as easy as sending me a message on Facebook to Pebble Baye Soap Co., Instagram @pebblebayesoapco or email to pbsc2003@gmail.com. I would be happy to discuss my inventory available and answer any questions you may have.
