Hi, my name is Karen Harbaruk and I have lived my entire life in Saskatoon, raising my family while working 2 jobs for over 30+ years. On my down time, if I had any, I let loose with activities that got me moving, like golf, softball, curling, dancing and the usual fitness classes. Then in 2018 my full-time job had closed its doors and then oddly enough the business from my second job did the same. Then there was Covid, well enough said. So I'm thinking that the Universe was tired of being subtle and decided that it was taking matters into its own hands and start me down the path that I was intended to walk.
I've always enjoyed drawing. Ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil in my hand, my mother would always have a pen and paper in her purse for when she needed to keep me occupied. If you haven't done that math yet this was way before Gameboy and CandyCrush. Even though I was a city girl I spent a lot of time at the farm either picking rocks on my parents’ land or playing on the stacks of straw bails, which were square back then. This is probably why my most favorite subject to draw when I was six years old were chickens wearing fashionable outfits. To this day I still get giddy when I get a great outfit come together of my own. As the years passed my family had me do some pet portraits and maybe I would try one or two pieces for myself but that would be one or two pieces over decades. Let's just say I was not consistent. I'm a self-taught artist, dabbling in a few mediums but watercolour holds my true passion. I love the luminosity and transparency of watercolour. I'm a bit of a control freak so carefully doing all the pre-paint planning of the composition and any prep work needed for a successful work of art was right up my alley, until it's time to throw all caution to the wind and give up all control to the medium. With each stroke, fingers are crossed and my breath is held, becoming a spectator to the magic of the medium.
I prefer to paint more organic subjects but I will take on man-made objects that breathe with their own life and character. From my city and lake life I look for subjects that catch my eye with colours and shadows, that makes me feel calm, happy, or reminiscent of good times...I want to make art that makes myself feel good when I look at it and hopefully that will convey to you, the viewer, for I truly believe that every day there should be at least one reason to smile and that could be from Just One Look.
